GEORGETOWN ADDS 2010 VERBAL COMMITMENT
Leave a Comment *********Follow NBE Sports on Twitter: http://twitter.com/NBESports*****Georgetown strikes on the 2010 late recruiting trail by adding a small forward commitment today. The Hoyas had hosted an official visitor from the 2010 class over the weekend when they wrapped up their regular season with a 74-47 demolition of Cincinnati in the Verizon Center.Despite no scholarship seniors on the roster, the Hoyas have at least four scholarships available for the class of 2010 and possibly five if Greg Monroe opts for the NBA Draft after his sophomore season. John Thompson III added a pair of signees in the fall period with letters of intent coming from Nate Lubick and Markel Starks. Now the Hoyas look to kick off an expected busy spring recruiting period with their third commitment of the 2010 class with a verbal commitment from Aaron Bowen. We have previously profiled in our premium section the recruitment of 2010 spring Hoya big man targets Maurice Walker and Moses Abraham while previously reporting Bowen’s visit. The 6-foot-6, 185-pound small forward originally committed to Marquette back in November of 2008 over early interest from Florida, Florida State, Auburn and others. He remained committed to The Golden Eagles through last summer before de-committing and re-opening his recruitment in early September of 2009. Former MU assistant Dale Layer was the primary recruiting contact for Bowen, but Layer moved on to a head coaching position at Liberty Univerisity and Bowen no longer had the same comfort level with Marquette as a result.Bowen also made a change in scenery as well, opting to spend his senior season at Quality Education Academy in Winston-Salem (NC), leaving Wolfson High School in Jacksonville (FL) where he was a 2nd team All-First Coast as a junior. It has been a move he feels has paid off greatly on and off the court.“The biggest advantage of attending QEA has been that I am making better grades because of the one-on-one help that I get here,” Bowen told NBE. “I feel that my game has gotten better because of the talent that I go against everyday in practice and every game we play. The thing that I realize by playing here is that my defense has gotten ten times better and my shooting [has improved, too].”Playing with a team that plays a national schedule in some of the most high-profile events, along side a 2011 prospect considered among the elite in the class in Quincy Miller, Bowen has been able to showcase his skills in front of many college coaches. The opportunity has paid off as Bowen made a verbal commitment today to Georgetown following a visit last weekend.“I committed today,” Bowen told NBE Basketball Report this afternoon.Bowen choseGeorgetown over Florida, Florida State, Duke, UNC-Charlotte, Providence, Liberty, Arkansas, Clemson, Georgia, Miami and Marshall.QEA head coach Isaac Pitts, Jr. confirmed Bowen’s commitment to the Hoyas via e-mail as well this afternoon, mentioning that Bowen will bring the Hoyas “scoring, athleticism [and] pure shooting” next season.Pitts told NBE last week that Bowen averaged 17.5 points a game along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists, but his biggest improvements since arriving at QEA came on the defensive side of the floor.“[He] has learned to become a better defender and he competes every play,” said Pitts.
